Christian Dior once opined “You can never take too much care over the choice of your shoes. Too many women think that they are unimportant, but the real proof of an elegant woman is what is on her feet.”
When it comes to buying the perfect pair of shoes, of course it can be fun but it can also be difficult to find something that meets your budget, comfort level and personal style.
It's important that you look for quality footwear that looks good but feels good.
Below, we'll talk you through different styles to meet our needs that are available at both online and in store at Miss Spirit.
So put your best foot forward with this guide to Women's Shoe Trends 2023 by Spirit/Miss Spirit.

Trainers used to be strictly considered sportswear but not anymore, you can now pair them with jeans or a dress and it looks just as good and socially acceptable. Stay comfortable and stylish by opting for trainers instead of flats this spring/summer.
When it comes to styling Chunky Trainers, balance is key. They are a statement piece on their own and can be toned down by being worn with wide fit pants and oversized sweaters or hoodies and can be levelled up by wearing them with skater dresses or even shorts.
Here is our favourite pair of Chunky White Trainers at Miss Spirit
If you browse through any magazine, scroll through any feed or even take a walk downtown, you're guaranteed to see somebody rocking a pair of combat boots/military boots this year.
The Boot has made a comeback in recent years and has been embraced by all kinds of fashion lovers and the success of the Combat Boot can be put down to its comfort, practicality and its timelessness.
For example, Jeans and Combat Boots are a match made in heaven and they suit wide leg, flared, skinny and straight leg pants. They can be worn casually with a jacket and t-shirt or dressed up with an overcoat or dress.
These Barrie Boots by Rant and Rave are one of our favourites.
The "Deck" shoe or "Boat" Shoe was made famous by Dubarry in the 80's when they created a shoe to be worn both on and off deck for its sailing community but the "Dubes" quickly became a fashion icon and the epitome of casual fashion and easy-living.
The boat shoe offers comfort and versatility and can be worn almost all year round. This shoe is undeniably casual and can be worn with plain pants and blouses or with a jumper and jeans.
They are durable and suit all types of customers whether you're looking for a preppy pair or for a simple but chic shoe that'll see you through spring, summer holidays and crisp autumns.

Elva Tan Boot by Rant and Rave at Miss Spirit
Pointed Boots are the perfect Autumn/Winter Boot for obvious reasons but we believe they can be worn all year round when styled correctly.
The "Pointy Boot" is a more formal option and lends itself better to denims, suit pants and dresses.
They offer a more elegant look than the standard chelsea boot or combat boot and can be bought in an array of colours and materials.
They're perfect for wearing to the office, to dinner or to a catch-up with friends after a busy week.
For comfort opt for traditional leathers and for something a bit more rock n roll, try suedes, metallics and prints.

Womens Ward Block Beige Platform Trainer
The modern take on a cult classic - stay cool and comfy with the new Block Platform by Vans.
All the bravado and cool of a pair of Dr Martens without the discomfort of breaking#
them in and within budget!
Timelessly elegant and comfortable and suitable for work or play!
In short, yes they are and it's welcomed because the "flat" is a staple of womenswear and is possibly the hardest working shoe in your wardrobe. Flats are back and with good reason because they suit all heights, body shapes, denims to dresses and what they might lack in design they make up for in comfort.
This year when it comes to trainers, the motto is "The Bigger-The Better''. It's all focussed on platform trainers and high tops. Vans, Converse, Nike and even high end fashion designers like Gucci have included hi-tops or chunky trainers in this year's collection. So if you're unsure about what to buy next, keep it simple and begin with a plain white chunky trainer.
At Miss Spirit we're always keeping our finger on the pulse of what's trending in womenswear and as Longford's leading womenswear store it's important that we have something for every customer. You can browse our new additions and our wardrobe staples online or in store.

Regardless of the occasion, weather or wage bracket, at Miss Spirit we've got you covered for whatever 2023 might throw your way. With so many types of dresses available it can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing the perfect one this year so we've put together a brief guide on what we consider the best Women's Dress Trends of 2023.
Warmer weather unapologetically favours dresses but we believe that when done right a dress can be "winterized" appropriately meaning you get more wear out of your favourite gowns this year.
The Maxi Dress is a Spring Summer stalwart but that doesn't mean it has to be shelved for when the evenings get darker and that bit cooler.
To get the most out of an Autumn/Winter Dress Combo, we suggest you think practically. The easiest way to get your gown winter ready is to "Layer Up" by adding cardigans, teddy fleeces and overcoats that compliment your outfit. As for footwear, Boots become your go-to as they'll look the part but also play the part by keeping you warm but looking elegant.
Cut Out Black Maxi Dress by Miss Spirit
The Long Sleeve Dress is the most versatile of gowns when paired with the right partners. They feel as light as your favourite blouse while still keeping us warm and looking elegant which means we can wear them all year round.
The easiest way to make any Long Sleeve Dress " Winter-Proof" is by pairing it with some faux fur or an overcoat. Explore dresses in different fabrics and don't be afraid to experiment with different prints and accessories. We've got something for every occasion whether it's a day spent in the classroom, the boardroom or a night on the dancefloor.
Explore some of our favourites here.
Brighter colours, lighter fabrics and longer evenings are what spring to mind when we think of Summer. The Summer Dress is the undisputed garment for looking cool while beating the heat. The Summer dress is usually a looser cut than others and is most commonly made from lightweight materials like cotton or linen that allow us to stay cool in higher temperatures they are available in an array of prints so you can be as bold as you want or as subtle as you want; there is no right or wrong.
The Mini Dress is any dress that has a hemline that finishes five inches above the knee. Mary Quant is credited with introducing us all to the Mini-Skirt and the Mini Dress and she said that to pull it off "it's all about balance". What she meant by this is that if you're wearing your dress with bare legs then it's best to cover your arms with a cardigan or overshirt and vice versa. Swap heels for flats to add height to your profile or some low tops for that casual look. We stock mini-dresses available in an array of prints and clothes so we guarantee we'll have something to suit everybody; florals, sequins, geometrics and more.
Nothing has made a comeback quite like denim and at Miss Spirit, we're all here for it. Just recently we spoke about the importance of good denim when it comes to buying the perfect jeans but what about when it comes to dresses and overalls?
The first thing to note is that Denim is considered a casual fabric for dresses or overalls and it's probably best to avoid them if you're heading to a gala or a wedding. Denim dresses work better for days on the beach or a beer garden or maybe a garden party with friends. Denim goes well with flats and or trainers and is the perfect partner to floral prints or animal prints and your favourite sunglasses.
Similarly, overalls look super on trend, are practical and undeniably comfortable. The go-to casual garment of 2023, try them with your favourite band t-shirt or striped Breton for that timeless riviera look.
Explore our Denim Dresses and Dungarees here.
The lace dress is to women and the suit is to men. It feels as good as it looks and when done right it's sure to turn heads no matter where you go. Traditionally Lace Dresses are worn simply with subtle accessories to not take away from the intricacies of the fabric itself so it's probably best to keep it simple with monotone accessories or other timeless accessories like pearls, heels or strap-style stilettos. Lace Dresses most commonly come in Black or Crimson reds but at Miss Spirit, we stock Lace Dresses in neutrals and pastels to ensure we've got something to suit everybody's style. The perfect dress to wear to a cocktail bar with friends or on a summer getaway with that special someone.

Bodies come in all shapes and sizes so it only makes sense that there are dresses available in all shapes and sizes too! By knowing what works best for your body type, you can take a lot of the stress out of deciding what to buy next. Our selection of dresses provides something for every body shape and here's our guide on finding the most flattering fit this year.
At Miss Spirit, we know that everybody is unique and has their body shape but we've identified some of the most common body shapes among our customers and put together a list of do's and don'ts for when it comes to finding your perfect dress.
Check them out below:
The pear body shape is usually characterised by having larger hips and thighs and narrower shoulders so when it comes to picking a dress it's important to accentuate your curves and balance the overall look.
An Hourglass Figure is usually characterised as a body that has bust and hip measurements that are nearly the same size. This body type is naturally symmetrical which means the top half is balanced with the bottom half.
When a woman has a body shape that consists of a larger bust and fuller midsection, we refer to this as the Apple Shape. It Is naturally well-proportioned and usually slender at the hips and not as curvy throughout as the Pear or Hourglass Shape.
If you have a bust and waist for measurement that is the same throughout, this is what we refer to as the Athletic Shape or the Rectangle; while their bust and hips are roughly equal, their waist is not as well defined as those with an hourglass shape. You might not have as many curves as the previously defined body types, so you want to add dimension to your body by adding texture and pattern.
Dresses come in a variety of materials, both natural and synthetic and each has its strengths and weaknesses. By understanding each fabric, you'll have a better idea of what will work for your body type when it comes to picking out a dress.
Chiffon
Lightweight, Plain Woven fabric made from silk yarn and is used in dresses, blouses and wedding attire
Cotton
The Most popular material in the world used for shirts, dresses, and underwear and is praised for its comfort and versatility it is breathable meaning that it keeps us cool in warmer weather
Crepe
A Plain, twisted fabric that has a wrinkled appearance; lightweight and soft and easy to work with.
Denim
A woven cotton most commonly dyed to be an indigo-coloured fabric it is praised for its durability and texture
Lace
A more delicate fabric constructed from looped, twisted or knitted yarn or thread. This fabric is often used to accent or embellish clothing, especially with bridal gowns and veils, though it can be found in shirts and nightgowns.
Velvet
Velvet can be made from cotton, linen, cool, silk, nylon or polyester. It is often used in blouses, shirts, coats, skirts, evening wear and outerwear.
Silk
The world's most luxurious natural fabric, silk is another soft, elegant fabric choice with a smooth touch and shimmering look. Silk is mostly used in wedding and evening gowns, shirts, suits, skirts, lingerie, ties and scarves.
When it comes to finding what colours suit your skin tone there is no right or wrong and often it's a case of trial and error but as a rule of thumb it is said that:
"skin with cool undertones looks best with greys, browns, blues, greens and purples. Skin with warm undertones looks best with either bright or light colours. And skin with neutral undertones looks great in bold, bright colours."

Since their conception in the late 1800s, Jeans have gone through a lot of changes but one thing hasn't changed; they're always on trend. No other item of clothing has been so greatly embraced by people from all walks of life as the jean and author of Denim; From Cowboys to the Catwalk; Paul Trynka explains why Jeans have such a broad appeal;
" Because denim changes as it ages and it reflects the lives people live"
We agree with Paul but we understand that every customer's demands are different so we've decided to help you decipher the multiple fits/styles and cuts that are the must-haves for 2023 when it comes to women's Jeans.
Here's our quick guide to finding the perfect pair for you!
Why should you invest in quality Jeans? Well, we believe that investing in good quality clothing is an investment in yourself. Denim in particular is a good investment because:
Like any garment or item of clothing when it comes to buying the perfect product it's important to consider things like Fabric Weight, Cut and Compatability. By this, we mean how heavy a material is, how it fits and how you can work it into your wardrobe.
Check out the leading trends for Women's Jeans in 2023.
High Waist Brown Flare
A Flare Jean is a fitted jeans that get gradually wider from the knee down. They are quite a snug fitting on the buttocks and thighs but relax as the denim drapes to the foot. Think of your flared jeans as relative to a bootcut jeans except with a bit more volume! They are normally higher-waisted jeans and the silhouette of the pants elongates a person's silhouette making us look taller than we are.
They're back with a bang and pair perfectly with heeled boots, high-tops or even a heeled shoe when paired with a blazer. Try our High Waist Blue Skinny Flare Jeans and we guarantee you'll feel just as good as you look.
High Waist Blue Skinny Flare Jeans...
The "Mom" jean became fashionable ironically but has come to stay. It got its name from the jeans shown on 90's TV sitcom Moms; high waist, long seat (butt) and loose cut and most readily available in mid-wash blue. They have a relaxed silhouette and that's important because the Mom Jean is all about comfort but that’s not to say that you'll look underdressed by opting for these jeans over a pair of skinnies. When done right, Mom Jeans can become the must-have look.
Wear them running errands with a classic T-Shirt and Trainers Combo or a Cropped Knit to compliment the jean's naturally high waist or with an oversized sweater and heels.

Cargo Jeans
The Cargo Jean is a nice deviation from the standard jeans we see on everyday people, it's a refreshing take on an already classic item of clothing but often the Cargo Jean gets overlooked. They might come with drawstring waistbands and cuffed hems like some tracksuit bottoms or they can come as rigid denim in a range of fits but the most notable feature of these pants is their pouch pockets on the thighs and legs and come in colours that aren't normally suited to standard denim like khaki, tan, brown and camouflage.
When people mention Cargo Pants or Cargo Jeans they never mention the practicality of the extra pockets which is great when you don't want to bring a bag to lunch, a meeting or a date with friends. Their relaxed shape lends itself to most body types and they can be dressed up by pairing them with heels or they can look urban/streetwear when teamed up with graphic tees or hoodies or a leather jacket.
The higher waist gives a streamlined silhouette and it does a good job of hiding any inconsistencies in our waistline like stubborn tummy bulges and it flatters both athletic and curvier body types and gives us a streamlined look.
If you have a smaller waist, they gradually relax as they drape so it makes you look more balanced. Likewise, if you have more curves the waistline does a good job of making us look symmetrical while accentuating your curves.
They are universally figure-flattering and go with just about any other item of clothing; chunky knits, crop tops, dress shirts, biker jackets, wool coats, trainers, boots- you name it!

We've already discussed some of the styles available when it comes to Women's Jeans trends for 2023 but we understand there is no " One Pair Fits All" when it comes to a customer's taste so below we have included a small guide on what we consider must know information when it comes to buying jeans.
We often hear low-rise, high-rise and mid-rise when it comes to jeans but what exactly does it mean; "the distance from the top of your waistline to the bottom of your crotch seam".
This can affect how long our top half can look compared to the bottom half as the rise placement judges where our perceived waistline will be.
For Women, it is recommended that you choose a rise that finishes just above your natural waist as this accentuates feminine curves or a high rise to achieve that already discussed streamlined look.
Fit:
The fit of a jean is referring to the cut of cloth or the shape of a trouser.
Denim material doesn't absorb dye the same way that other fabrics do and this is what gives denim its unique appearance. We refer to this as Wash. You've probably heard of stonewashed, mid-washed, acid-washed etc. and these are all variations of colours of denim.
As a rule of thumb, Darker Denims and Indigo Blues are considered formal and can be worn with a blazer, blouse or roll neck and Light Wash Jeans and Stonewashed jeans are considered more casual and MidWash Jeans are the go-to for smart/casual.

]]>Our guide to staying warm while looking cool this Winter/Spring 2023
Now that the colder weather has most definitely arrived, we’ve seen an increased demand for warmer clothes and we believe you don’t have to sacrifice fashionability for practicality this Winter/Spring. We’ve all been there, we’ve pieced together the perfect outfit for an event only for the weather to force us to cover it up in layers upon layers of knitwear just to stay warm.
We’ll discuss how to buy smarter and get more use out of knitwear this season and how to use your garments to their full potential.
Jackie Kennedy wears a rollneck knit
Knitwear has undergone somewhat of a revival in the past two years and it’s about time. It used to be that anything functional couldn’t be fashionable but things change and this time for the better!
Knitwear used to be considered the “ugly duckling” of womenswear but now it’s taken centre stage with creative takes on cardigans, Turtlenecks and cropped jumpers.
Here’s what to look out for in the year to come.
Cable Knit Pink Cropped Jumper from Miss Spirit
Cropped Tops come and go from decade to decade but today’s take on the humble midriff-exposing garment is stronger than its predecessors and that’s because they are available in different fits, different knits and different colours and that makes them more versatile as a wardrobe essential.
You can wear it as a standout piece or to accompany some favourite items of clothing. The knitted cropped top pairs well with midi/pencil skirts or over a dress or a more casual approach can see it paired with some high-waisted pants or under a denim or leather jacket.

By choosing the right cut and colour, it’s a worthy investment that can be worn year in and year out.

Sally Green Knit Jumper

The Tunique is a little less known knitwear item and since its introduction to everyday fashion quickly become a favourite for the office, at home and on weekend getaways in colder climates. Worn over a shirt makes it preppy and worn as a centrepiece it creates the ultimate cosy look when worn with accessorised hats and scarves or boots. A Nordic take on modern knitwear to beat the cold.
White Cable Knit Tunique
If you enjoy wearing dresses in warmer months and are reluctant to adopt pants/jeans and jackets this winter, then the Knit Dress is for you. They lend themselves perfectly to trench coats and above-the-knee boots or under a leather jacket or as a solo item or over a coloured shirt like pictured below. They are most commonly available in neutral colours but explore more fun colours and patterns on our website or in-store.

The cardigan has come a long way from your Nan’s favourite knit. It’s featured in High Street Windows, The Runway and even on the mainstage at Electric Picnic. It’s easy to dress up or dress down to suit the occasion and suit most body types and silhouettes. Wear it over your smart casual wear as an outer layer, wear it over a graphic t for the Indie Rock Look or wear it with a skirt or shirt headed out for drinks.
Classic Cardigan Inspo
Modern Takes On Classic Cardigan
If you're more adventurous and open-minded to more modern takes on knitwear, then “Cut Out” is your new best friend. It’s a statement piece that will see you through Winter and Spring 2023. It’s for the edgier look whether you opt for a Cut Out Dress or Jumper or Cardigan, they’re a notch above the standard.
Cut Out Lurex Pink Jumper

Nothing exudes power and confidence and a sense of cool more than a black roll neck under a blazer or jacket. The Knit Tank Top is one step above that. It goes with high-waisted pants, skirts, jeans and woollen trousers. It’s practical yet fashionable and can be worn with most items in your wardrobe.
No other garment is as essential this Winter/Spring as premium Knitwear and we’re here to talk you through what we consider to be the best trends for the Winter/Spring ahead.
The Crewneck is the most common style of jumper available to men and that’s due to its versatility.
Knitwear Gallery from Benetti, Kenrow, Jack Jones and More
It can be worn with chinos and a button-down shirt to the office or under a gilet with jeans and boots on a day out or more recently with tailored pants and trainers for a cool casual look.
We stock different weights, patterns and colours to suit most customers, whether you’re the younger gentleman or the older man with classic taste.
Looking for something a small bit different than your average jumper? the Quarter/Halfzip has long time been the go-to for the professional who needs to stay warm while still looking sharp. They’re perfect under a blazer or coat at work, under a gilet on the sideline of a pitch or with slacks when heading out for dinner. Available in an array of colours, patterns and textures. Some of our favourites are from Sixth Sense, Benetti and Tom Penn. Browse the collection here.

The V Neck is just as versatile as the crew neck but it is better suited to a more tailored look as the low-cut collar leaves more room to show off a tie and or oxford/dress shirt. It can be worn with suit pants and loafers or jeans and a sports coat to create the perfect look for working in the classroom, the office or as an added layer of warmth as part of a suit.

Ray Liotta wears a knitted Polo with his suit as “Henry Hill” in Goodfellas (1990)
The Knitted Polo is quickly becoming the must-have item of 2023 and is made famous by David Beckham, Idris Elba and iconically by Ray Liotta as Henry Hill in GoodFellas.
We can all agree that the one thing these men have in common is that they are unapologetically stylish or “slick” for want of a better word. The Knit Polo take the seriousness of a suit down a notch and raise the stylishness of an ordinary jacket and jean outfit. We can’t get enough of Benetti’’s Trento in Stone or The Blaigor by Jack and Jones in Olive.

Knitted Polo Shirts from Spirit
The turtleneck is one of those must-have garments for any smart-dressed man. They keep us warm, suit all ages and can be incorporated into most wardrobes. The Turtleneck can be worn under a biker jacket, as part of a suit, under a denim shirt or as a solo piece with chinos, jeans or suit pants. Available in an array of colours, the roll-neck is one of those items that never go out of style and is worth investing in. Our favourite is the Emil by Jack and Jones. This is sure to be the top trend of 2023, so why not be ahead of the crowd and pick one up in-store or online today at Spirit.

A Waistcoat is an easy way to add depth to an outfit and another level of formality to a suit but with that territory comes its pitfalls too. There’s a fine line between looking like Frank Sinatra and looking like Ronnie O Sullivan. There are different cuts, patterns and materials and each has its own place in men’s fashion.
In this article, we’ll discuss how to incorporate a vest into your wardrobe and make sure you feel as good as you look whether it’s going to the office, grabbing a drink or saying “ I Do”.
Often we emphasise the importance of fit when it comes to Suiting and waistcoats are no different. It should hug your silhouette and cover your waistband and be coherent with the rest of your outfit.
Waistcoats are most commonly available as Double Breasted, Single Breasted, Lapelled and Scooped and in a wider range of patterns and materials than most other garments but each has its own role to play.
If you’re a slimmer build then a Single Breasted Pinstripe and Check Patterns suit your shape best as they elongate the profile and add structure to your frame.
If you’re a broader Gentleman then Patterned and Textured Waistcoats are a better choice as they break up the monotony of a solid three-piece and split the profile into individual parts. Try a Double Breasted Waistcoat or Lapelled Waistcoat as they work well with fuller silhouettes.
The things to look for to ensure a good fit:
Large Armholes for ease of movement
No wrinkling across the vest
A smooth fit across the chest ( No gaping at the shoulders)
As a rule of thumb- Never close your bottom button.
( I cannot emphasise this enough; it separates the men from the boys and lets people know that you know your stuff!)
No shirt reveal above the waistband
Why? Well, waistcoats are considered formalwear and don’t always work as a casual item. Here are our tips on how and when to wear a waistcoat.
If you’re invited to a Wedding then a waistcoat can be a valuable asset. They add personality to a suit and they make you look suave and stylish even after you ditch your suit jacket. They can be a welcomed break from a solid colour scheme too. In more recent years we’ve welcomed back the idea of contrasting waistcoats for weddings and as a staple of classic style, no racegoer is fully dressed without their tweed or wool waistcoat.
For Weddings, a good tip is to opt for a waistcoat that is a shade lighter or darker than your base colour if it’s a Wedding. You should choose finer materials and colours to that complement your outfit.
David Beckham wears a Double Breasted Grey Waistcoay Under His Charcoal Tailcoat
Benetti James Navy with Anthony in Grey- Classic. Cool and Sophisticated
While Weddings or Family events might allow for more creativity when it comes to styling, Black Tie is a much more disciplined dress code. There are rules set out in black and white ( No Pun Intended).
If you should choose to wear a waistcoat often it will be scooped ( a deeper cut than normal) or double-breasted and in a contrasting cloth. The idea behind this is to showcase your shirt details. The back of your waistcoat should be a fine silk with a paisley or jacquard pattern to emphasise the elegance of your event.
Check out our Kelvin and Kelly waistcoats in a variety of colours.
If you wish to wear a waistcoat casually then ditch the fine materials and opt for a heavier cloth like Tweed, Cord or Suede.
Johnny Depp for GQ 2018
The nature of a vest is to look serious and sophisticated so as a casual item we need to tone it down. Instead of a formal collared shirt and tie, in this scenario, we recommend choosing a grandad collar shirt. Trousers should semi tailored or chino material. Add a pair of Chelsea Boots to complete the casual and cool look.
A waistcoat can be incorporated into a smart casual outfit to give us a preppy look and for a more grown-up look try a turtleneck with a waistcoat and jacket and loafers. It shows others that we know what we’re about but we’re not afraid to have fun. Try pairing your waistcoat with your trusted blazer or sports coat to add character to your work attire. The Marc Darcy range offers semi-formal attire that can be dressed up or down and suits all ages and body types. So if you don’t want to go “ Full Suit” then try a blazer with a waistcoat alongside your favourite pants or dark denim. We can’t get enough of the Abbott or Scott collection from Marc Darcy.
Abbott Tweed Waistcoat
The traditional three-piece is the safest option when it comes to dressing formally but that’s not to say it’s boring. A lot of the time in Tailoring, less is in fact more. This look is timeless, suits most body types and fulfils all levels of formality. If you wanna look the part but not necessarily stand out, then try the classic look from our Stanley or Antoine range for Greys and Peter and Jonny for French Blues and Navy.
Spezzato literally translates as broken. This is a concept used by Italians to use pieces of clothing they might already own by wearing them as part of a suit. Basically, it means that your waistcoat will be a complete contrast to your jacket and pants or alternatively your jacket will be different to your vest and pants.
E.g. Navy Suit with Grey Waistcoat / Grey Suit with Navy Waistcoat
Our Latest collections come with a contrasting waistcoat to save you the stress of finding the perfect match.
For Example, The Benetti Ronnie in Indigo and Grape are quickly becoming the must-have three-piece.
Simon Beige by Benetti with Jonny Navy WC and Pants
Ryan Reynolds at Cannes Film Festival - Chinos, Oxford Shirt, Waistcoat, Boots, Belt
A waistcoat can add depth to a simple outfit and in warmer months can replace an overshirt or a jacket. A pair of chinos and an oxford shirt can be quickly taken up a notch by adding a vest or waistcoat just like above. It doesn’t have to be something loud or out of your comfort zone. Something simple like this is easily put together before a night out or city break.
Shop our take on the look here;
As the title suggests, this look involves layering clothes to create a look that’s practical and fashionable. Suited to colder months or unpredictable climates, by adding items of different weights you can be reassured you’re going to stay warm and look good. The idea is that the fabric will be lighter the closer to the body it’s worn and gets heavier as we move outward. All items should subtly contrast in colour but you can really shake it up when it comes to textures.
Autumn/Winter and wool and tweed go hand in hand and this look suits all ages, body types and tastes. You can add more personality to your outfit by wearing a hat or scarf in colder weather like our Harris Tweed Hudson hat or Bamboo Scarves from Swole Panda.
Now that you know the ins and outs and dos and don't of vests and waistcoats, it’s time to find our perfect match. Browse our selection online or call in-store and speak to our team Arturs, Cian, Joe, Paddy, Peter or Shane and they’ll help you with fabrics, fits and formalities.
]]>“The blazer is the single most important piece in my wardrobe.” - Tom Ford
There are several levels of formality in menswear; casual, smart casual, business casual, business professional, business formal, black tie and white tie and the good news is that a blazer can be dressed up or down accordingly to suit most.
Casually, The blazer can be worn with a t-shirt, denim, suede loafers or even trainers and it makes us look presentable and professional but also kind of fun. This is the perfect look for going for dinner, grabbing a drink after work or even for a weekend getaway.
For Business Casual, the blazer can be paired with a light knit or polo shirt and chinos- a look that says we get things done but that feels comfortable on our commute, at the desk or even on the shop floor meeting customers.
Business Professional might mean we need to dress up our blazer by wearing it with some slim fitting, contrasting tailored trousers, a long sleeve shirt/tie and some derby shoes or monk straps. This is ideal for when we are meeting our more senior staff, management or high-profile clients.
The Preppy look can consist of a soft shell blazer, denim shirt, knit tie and a tassel loafer for when you’re teaching a class, working in creative sectors and front of house in hospitality.
If you are invited to an event, for example, a friend’s wedding and you’re unsure what the dress code is, grab your blazer, your best formal shirt, some well-tailored slacks and some black shoes to combat any insecurity about looking the part.
Wedding Season is all year round these days and with that comes fast-paced changes in suiting so it’s important to have versatility in our wardrobes from suits to separates.
A lot of the success of a Blazer depends on how it fits. We look for a similar profile in a blazer as we do in a suit jacket. A suit jacket will be more structured and will have a pre-determined shape. A Blazer though is unstructured, unlined and overall gives a softer profile. When it comes to picking what style to invest in, you should consider the following:
When we imagine a blazer, we picture the classic navy blue all-wool jacket but what about other fabrics? As a material, cotton is breathable and it’s super lightweight which means it’s a good jacket to grab if you need to look smart but don’t need added warmth. Its lightweight fabric usually comes in brighter tones than traditional wool too which is a welcomed break from our normal navy, greys and blacks. Cotton Blazers are unlined and are made with the same style sleeve as a shirt, this means our profile looks slighter and more “sleek” and because of the way that cotton is woven, the jacket allows air to pass between threads keeping us cool whilst looking cool. Our favourite summer weight jacket is the Jack and Jones Solaris Blazer Medieval Blue Super Slim because it mixes traditional design with more modern characteristics like its half-lined shell which means it won’t wrinkle while we’re getting things done.
If an occasion demands more formal attire but you’re reluctant to donne a full suit then a blazer is a perfect choice. Pairing your classic charcoal suit jacket with contrasting pants is more interesting than the traditional suit and if you find yourself in your mid to late 20’s there’s a good chance you've several weddings coming up this year and to be honest the mix-and-match approach is a nice break from all the formality that Wedding Season brings.
This option also means that we get more value for money from our wardrobe as when we feel we might have outworn our favourite suit, now we see the potential to use it as a separate. The Mix and Match approach can work incredibly well and can also go terribly wrong but to avoid any faux pas, it’s best to stick to these rules of thumb. Your Suit Jacket should fit you properly and your suit pants should be made of similar cloth to that of your jacket. When it comes to colour, they should be a shade lighter or darker than your jacket. If in doubt think classic. The Italians call this look “Spezzato” or “ Pieces” and we reference this approach within our Harold and Simon collection at Spirit Clothing.
Pictured is Harold Blazer in Ice with Jonny Navy Pants
Linen unlike any other fabric out there genuinely gets better with age. As it is worn, washed and lived in, the cloth gets softer, and smoother and shapes to our physique- it grows with you. Linen is incredibly durable too and is up to ten times stronger than cotton and this adds to its lifespan. Flax from which linen is made is absorbent which means Linen jackets are somewhat stain-resistant and therefore easily dyed or washed. It works perfectly for grown-up parties, dinner dates or summer evenings in the city. We can’t get enough of A Fish Named Fred's Recent Line of Linen Jackets.
We’ve already mentioned the versatility of the blazer but how do we put that into practice? At this stage, it’s not so much what type of blazer you’re wearing but more so what you’re wearing with it. We’ve put together some styling tips for the fashion-forward gentleman eager to get the most out of his new investment.
Nothing says effortless cool more than the combo of a crisp white crew neck t-shirt against a rich blue blazer. It’s the perfect casual Friday office attire or the modern take on Sunday Best. At first, it feels counterintuitive, the combination of tailored clothes and untailored clothes but it feels casual while it looks contemporary and suave. If you’re the kind of person who wants to make a strong first impression but is also not afraid to show your fun side, then look no further.
For a modest look, we recommend plain t-shirts, textured t-shirts go well with textured blazers and graphic t-shirts give an outfit an edgy look and the longstanding Breton T-shirt has been a cornerstone of every well-dressed man’s attire since the 60s. Swap your lace-up derby shoes for a plain white trainer or a textured loafer or even a deck shoe like Dubarry.
The workplace can be monotonous when it comes to attire. For so long, we’ve settled for bland work trousers and button-down shirts and a lot of the time these outfits show no individuality. The easiest way to combat this is by incorporating a blazer and some dress shoes into your workwear. The Blazer can be thrown on in a hurry if you have a last-minute appointment, it makes you look professional while tending to everyday tasks and it will go with most of the office-friendly shirt and trouser combos we all love so much. I’ve included a brief guide to matching Blazers with Pants below to help you learn your way around mix-and-match combos.
Navy Blazers work well with :
Grey Blazers compliment;
Khaki/Olive/Tan/Beige all pair well with:
Don’t hesitate to ask your tailor for their recommendations about pairing clothes appropriately.
When it comes to accessories, it’s up to you how extravagant you want to be but it’s important to remember that accessories are there to enhance your outfit not to take away from it. There’s a saying “ Worry about the cake, then worry about the candles”; the cake being your outfit and the candles being your accessories. If you’re reluctant to incorporate accessories we suggest starting small and by that we mean choose subtle, discreet but effective accents that will raise your outfits game.
Introducing a simple pocket-square to a shirt/blazer combo adds elegance, a boutonniere makes the outfit immediately more formal and debonair, a tie clip adds a certain level of professionalism to a business casual outfit and a pair of colourful socks take the serious edge off a muted outfit combo.
In recent seasons, the must-have accessory is a designer wallet and we all advocate wallets that match your belt and shoes as it shows attention to detail.
Neckwear can totally change an outfit from formal to fun and we encourage trying out ties and bowties in different textures, widths and patterns to help you find your sweet spot when it comes to accenting a blazer.
What we’ve listed above is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to accessorizing but there really isn’t a right or wrong way it just takes some time to figure out your style.

Yeah the wedding day is gonna be one of the best days of your life. And you've done at least a year's worth of planning so it's time to kick back, relax and reap the rewards right?
Hold the fort: one last little checklist is required for the morning of the wedding. Tick this off and you're laughing.
This is NOT something to leave till the last minute. We repeat, NOT something to leave till the last minute. Too many good soldiers have fallen at the last hurdle, last seen in an absolute flap the morning of the wedding. Don’t do it to yourself lads. Not worth it.
Keep the jocks dark (see the point on safety pins below) and a good fit, you don’t want anything to mess up the lines of your beautifully tailored suit. And the socks – always a good idea to do something with them to cement the occasion.
We advocate a pair of official wedding socks with your initials monogrammed on them, or matching socks for you and the groom's party.
Although it is nice to have a special pair of wedding socks – for luck, for superstition, for the ritual, but there’s a chance you could crack a hole, sweat through them or maybe they simply go missing during the dance-off.
So have a spare pair to hand. Just in case
Nurofen Plus, Dioralyte, plasters, Lucozade Sport – you’ll scoff now and thank us later. Headache tablets to kill a hangover, Dioralyte to rehydrate you, plasters for an accidentally shaving nick or stubbed toe...or beer can cut...
With a lil' brandy – who could begrudge a groom a wee nip for luck before the main event?
The best man or one of your groomsmen will keep an eye on the gifts for you, but don’t forget to organise them.
Most likely your bride will be all over this - you’ll have a gift/some flowers for the mothers, possibly something for the fathers, and maybe something for the wedding planner.
Most likely the cufflinks will be meaningful. A hand-me-down from your Pops, a special gift from your bride or maybe they’re a key part of the suit theme.
Whatever it is, they’re integral – and one of the easiest things to misplace the morning of the wedding. Have a designated zone for them and keep them there.
Last thing you need a bit of canapé stuck in your tooth for the wedding pictures. Those damn canapés are always full of colourful, fiddly bits, just ripe for getting wedged in between your front teeth.
This is just a nice thing to do and sets the right tone for the day. It’s a private little love letter to leave in her room the morning of the wedding. Hand it to her chief bridesmaid and she’ll sort the right place to leave it.
It’s a special little communication between the two of you to let her know how excited you are to see her in a few short hours.
Again to leave with her the morning of the wedding. In fairness, she’s probably done most of the wedding planning. We are modern men these days, but there is only so much decorating, favour-planning and colour swashing we can digest.
This is a little acknowledgement of all her hard work, plus something to get her excited and calm any jitters. A monogrammed dressing gown is great (see Brown Thomas) or an initial necklace or watch (see Chupi)
Phone, charger, extra charger, extra-extra charger – even though your best man should be in charge of the running of the day, it is inevitable that there are a few last-minute things that you might need your phone for – one last double check with the caterer or the band.
Or there might be a few candid moments you want to capture, between yourself and your bride.
It’s a sweaty day, that’s all we can say lads. You’ll probably have walked 10 miles off yourself before the actual ceremony (a mixed bag of nervous walking and last minute errands) and that’s before the speeches – and what about the dancing?
For a split arse, split shirt, split cummerbund, waistcoat or a busted bow-tie. The after-dinner dancing can get exceptionally rowdy. Which brings us to...
Have you got any? If not, stock up. It’s vital for the groom to bust a move at his wedding. Swing lessons if you’re really committed, practice the Running Man or Gangnam Style if not.
These days it’s plenty common for the after-dinner music to take the shape of a Spotify playlist. Sometimes it’s a favour from your music-obsessed best-mate, sometimes your groomsman.
Or maybe it’s something you and your bride-to-be have decided to do together to escape some of the more tedious aspects of wedding planning.
Remember ALWAYS HAVE A BACK UP. So you don’t have to subject your guests to the terrifying prospect of Random: a musical journey from Abba through to Counting Crows, Enya, Venga Boys and any other embarrassing guilty pleasures you might have.
Technically not your responsibility but sure it’s no harm to double-check with your best man or page boy.
Decide in advance where you store the cards and gifts handed to you by your guests.
It’ll be the best man looking after this task, but guests will inevitably hand something to you or your bride, so make sure you have some idea or where the loot is stored in case you need to do a drop-off.
Have you doubly, triply checked you have it? Did we mention it was important?
]]>Genius eh?
If you’re all about the groomsmen looking sharp AF at the wedding and want bespoke suits for the party, then the only way to do it is in a suit fitting weekend.
Leave it in the hands of the experts, while using the time to get the band back together again for one last hoorah.
Firstly, you get clearance from the Missus – although what’s not to love? You’re being organised, resourceful and ensuring that the wedding pictures are going to look super slick. Anyway, it’s what the bridesmaids get to do right?
Well we’d obviously recommend you come in to visit us here at Spirit clothing in Longford. We are one of the leading suit providers in the country and stock best-in-class brands like the Irish-owned Benetti and the UK’s leading suit providers Base London and Mark Darcy.
Our staff are suit experts; they know the brands inside-out, the top-selling products, and the tastes of Irish men. But most importantly - they know how to handle a suit-fitting stag party.
They’ll keep it relaxed, fun and they won’t let you leave without the job being done.
Best to get down the night before so you can all be relaxed the day of the fittings (i.e. not arrive late). Organise a convoy for the road trip and assign roles – one to sort out the music, one to provide the snacks, one to sort the directions and one to simply provide the laughs.
Make a pitstop in a supermarket for supplies – fry-based goods, booze and maybe the toiletries you forgot to pack. Get down Friday evening and explore the local pub scene for a few scoops and a chat about the wedding plans/the latest transfer season.
Up the next morning for breakfast (we suggest nominating a cook in advance); maybe suss out a nearby walk in the area so you don’t bring the “pints ‘n fry” gut to the fitting. And a bit of fresh air to clear the heads is never a bad thing.
Clean jocks and socks and a positive attitude. If you have wedding shoes already or if the groomsmen are wearing their own shoes, make sure you have them with you. Give yourself 3-4 hours depending on your number of groomsmen.
The main event is The Suit. But don’t forget about the smaller details – shirts, shoes, cufflinks, waistcoats, cravats, pockets squares, ties.
Take pictures so you can show the missus for a) proof that it was a suit-fitting and not just a second stag and b) that she’s happy with the fit, the style and the colour palette.
Be mindful of a few things though:
Be clear about what you are and aren’t covering suit-wise. Are you covering the cost of buying/ renting the suit? Does that include shoes? Shirts?
Have you decided a total budget?
When will they be ready? How will you collect them? Will you need to clear space in the diary for a second fitting?
This is one project you want locked down and sorted by the time you’re making the journey home.
And BOOM – job done, it’s on to dinner, drinks and maybe a nightclub. Yes, you can congratulate yourself for a thoroughly efficient weekend.
Roadtrip? Check. Wedding Suits? Check. Banter with the lads? Check. A few scoops and a cheeky dance? Check and check!
If heading away overnight, be mindful of the fact that most of your compadres have already enjoyed a stag weekender with you. And even though you’re clearly putting on THE wedding of the year, it may not be the only wedding of the year.
So be respectful of other’s budgets and don’t go expecting a literal Stag Round 2 – it might just be a good nosh and a rake of pints with the lads. Don’t be expecting another round of go-karting. Don’t come home in a hoop.
The wedding date is getting closer and there are still things to do. Your missus will not appreciate a severely hungover head.
]]>Stag...what could go wrong? A pile of lads, a pile of cans and a pile of banter – that’s all you need right? WRONG. There’s a little bit more planning required than that.
And your best man, no matter how insistent he is that everything is in hand, needs a steer. So, what does he need a steer on?
Firstly – the stag is a mix of people which you may not usually have together on a night out/in the same room. Are you going to invite your father and your bride’s father to a nightclub?
Reckon your Ultimate Frisbee teammate will have lots to say to Nigel from accounts? Is the bride’s teetotal brother going to bunk up with your perpetually sozzled friend from primary school?
You need to put a list together and try decide the best way to structure the weekend. Maybe the “oldies” only come for dinner and a few scoops on the first night?
Maybe the second day is optional with an activity, so those that don’t like to party too hard can still feel involved, but leave feeling virtuous that night?
In your excitement, you'll want to invite everybody and their mother and assume everyone will get on. But in reality, this is about people management, and if you put in a little strategic thinking beforehand, you’ll get so much more out of the weekend.
Heard the one about the groom who had to be put to bed by midnight on the first night and couldn’t get out of bed for two days? Don’t let this be you.
Even though the last time you had all of the same faces in one place was during your glorious raving years, you’re older now. Wiser too.
You know you have less energy, stamina and your metabolism has slowed down. So, take it easy breezy on the first night and know the shot of tequila that’s one too many. Second night? Have all the tequilas.
Lads don’t really like having a plan. We like to keep it easy-breezy, loosey-goosey, fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants. But you see, on a stag, without a plan, men fall down. Quite literally. They go AWOL, they go missing, they forget where they’re from, they forget their own names.
You need a plan for multiple things. Firstly, to plan the food. A gang of men without a regular eating schedule? Chaos. The food is for stamina, storage and soakage. Ignore it at your peril.
The second part of the plan is to prevent the candidates most likely to go M.I.A. to...well, not go M.I.A. Make sure everyone has an itinerary of sorts – even if it’s loose – so that the stragglers can eventually make their way back to camp.
Decide what level of smut you’re comfortable with and communicate that VERY CLEARLY to your best man. Remember, there are going to be people there of a certain vintage who just won't look at you in the same way if certain thresholds are crossed. And you can never go back, never unsee. So decide well in advance what’s in and what’s out.
Sometimes, there can be a lull in proceedings. A load of grown, middle-aged men going hard at it over a few nights – there’s going to be unavoidable hangovers. So we suggest stock-piling on a few games for distraction.
With games, the rule of thumb is, the less complicated the better – poker, tiddlywinks, fussball – table tennis if you’re up for it. Or even make sure to pack a Playstation.
A few hours of interacting without having to speak is enough to recharge the batteries.
Lastly, make sure someone is taking pictures. Very easy to forget in all the boisterous fun of the weekend, but it’s a crying shame not to capture the weekend.
Also have your 'weekend after First Aid Kit' ready, prepared and ingested before you head home. Lucozade Sport, Solpadeine
Plus, lots of coffee, a big greasy fry, a shower, multiple mouth-wash rinses, maybe another shower for good luck and a bracing walk in the fresh air before you return home to your loved one. She’ll thank you for it.
Oh, and don’t forget your mobile. Or Nigel from accounts. Think he was last seen roaming around the Main Street.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned wedding guest, the stag-do will be the most highly-anticipated event in the pre-wedding calendar.
Choosing a suitable location that ticks your group requirements will be crucial to the overall success of the weekend. If you’re a groomsman planning the party on behalf of the main man himself, be sure to suss out his perfect vision of the ultimate lads trip.
It’s also wise to factor the following considerations into your brainstorming session; budget per person, the average age of attendees, the time of year, available transport links, local attractions, and activities.
To help ease the burden, these are THE top seven stag destinations across Europe. For the stereotypical party animal, to the more refined gentleman, there’s a location to suit everyone.
A budget-friendly alternative for those who aren’t keen on the jet-setter lifestyle, a jaunt to Carrick is a fantastic option for all ages. A hidden gem in county Leitrim, yet not a million miles away, this town is a great all-rounder.
There is no shortage of outdoor activities to stimulate the adventurer, from zorbing and quad biking, to kayaking and clay pigeon shooting.
Plus, if you’re on a tight budget, there is plenty of self-catering accommodation options that will help keep the cost per person to a minimum.
Perks: Easy on the wallet & dad-friendly.
Dubbed the new 'Dam, the stag-do is still in its infancy in Prague. This means your group can enjoy the perfect concoction of cultural delights and naughty nightspots.
By day, wander through the winding streets admiring the wonderful architecture and inhaling the wafting smell of the city’s mouth-watering delicacy; the Trdelnik.
As night falls, the fun begins. Pub crawls in Prague are legendary. A ticket costs around €22 per person and includes entry into one of the city’s biggest nightclubs with on-site ice bar. Beer is an absolute bargain also at around €1 per pint. Score!
Hot tip: Beware of pick-pockets in busy tourist hotspots.
Best time of the year to go: Late spring or early autumn to avoid the soaring summer temperatures.
Renowned for its breath-taking scenery, The Cotswolds is an ideal destination for the more mature and sophisticated groom-to-be. Home to some of the best golf resorts in the UK, the region also boasts a variety of deluxe country manors – the perfect combination for a more subdued retreat.
If money isn’t an obstacle and you fancy a flutter on the horses, coordinating your stay with a visit to Cheltenham will be a huge tick off your bucket list.
No doubt the competition will be fierce in the fashion stakes, so don’t forget to pack for the occasion! A dapper suit with coordinating pocket square or blazer and trousers combo should do the trick nicely.
Best time of the year to go: March for the Cheltenham Festival or July for the Cotswold Beer Festival.
Ibiza and Magaluf are old news on the clubbing circuit. It’s all happening in Pag – and at a fraction of the price. Situated just off the coast of Croatia, Pag is the island that never sleeps. A must for young and lively groups seeking some fun in the sun, the world’s top DJs play at an array of open air clubs along the strip at Zcre Beach. If you can stomach a few day-time activities following a hard night’s partying, a booze cruise on the Adriatic is highly recommended.
Best time of the year to go: Late June for Hideout Festival.
How to get there: Fly Dublin to Zadar. A bridge connects mainland Croatia to the island allowing you to travel by bus from around €7. You can also catch the ferry for approximately €17pp.
Two grooms can only mean twice the fun. So when it comes to the stag, a short trip overseas is highly recommended. The vibrant Stanley Street Quarter is Liverpool's beating heart of UK's LGBT party scene and place to seriously let loose. Exuding quirk and colour from every pore, the mirage of cobbled streets lead to some of the best cocktail bars imaginable. A flawless choice for a stag party in the city.
Play & Stay: Aloft Liverpool.
The diverse and charming city of Porto is not a match for a weekend of wild antics. This chilled region is a paradise for the water sports enthusiast. Sitting along the River Douro, stag parties can enjoy activities such as surfing, kayaking and yachting by day.
By night, socialise whilst sipping the many craft beers on tap and soaking up the mild atmosphere.
Perks: Portugal is a relatively short and hassle-free flight from both Ireland and the UK.
Carlsberg don't do stag parties, but if they did...Similar to Prague, Copenhagen is becoming hugely popular as an alternative stag destination. A cultural mecca with much more to offer than just nightlife and underground nightclubs, the city is equally beautiful and distinctly cool. Roam the city’s streets whilst appreciating the many microbrewery pubs and the unofficial ‘Vesterbro’ hipster area. A trip to the world-famous Carlsberg brewery is a must - it would be rude not to.
Perks: Compact city and easy to navigate for a short stay.
]]>So you’ve had the engagement party, the Stag of All Stags and a suit-fitting weekend. You’ve had a million WhatsApp messages and late-night phone-calls. You’ve had emergency pints, celebratory pints, what-the-hell-am-I-doing pints and casual pints over footie.
The lads have been with you every step of the way. If they haven’t got much to offer in the wedding decorations department, they’ve made up for it by being a constant source of moral support. The Lads. They’re just brilliant aren’t they?
And they deserve a little bit of recognition. It’s been a long-held tradition that the bride bestows a lovely gift upon her bridesmaids, but in recent years Groomsmen Favours have really gathered momentum, according to Claire McCarthy from the Bash Company.
Some of the most popular ideas include:
These have the added benefit of being both sentimental and practical. Get something bespoke or personalised (engraved initials or symbols of something you share a love for) and use them tofinish off the suit on the Big Day. Chupi do a nice little range of cufflinks and offer personalisation services.
Of course, there is the trend of gifting the suit, or part of the suit – like the shoes or the accessories (bow tie/tie/ pocket-square/ socks) but all of this depends on budget of course.
A personalised wallet for the best man is always a good option – plus you can have a bit of fun with the message if you keep it on the inside. We like Irish company Carve On– who do a range of leather goods that you can personalise.
These are extremely popular, especially as it’s the gift that keeps on giving. This year they’ll be used at your wedding. Next year they’ll be snuck into the Electric Picnic. Again, you can get the hipflask engraved with a special message. And you can now get personalised logos for miniature bottles of spirits.
If you want a keepsake that’s loud and proud, a framed print is a good option – you know it’s going to sit on a wall or a shelf somewhere. We love this “Ah Jaysis” print from online interior store April and the Bear.

From selective invites that offend the in-laws to choosing a worse than dodgy DJ (you had one job) – being a groom can conjure up a whole host of potential disasters.
The journey to 'I do' isn't always smooth sailing and, unfortunately, doesn't quickly forgive rookie mistakes.
Yes, it may be your first time up the aisle, but your bride won't much care about that if the flower arrangements are wrong and you cannot tell the difference between ivory and off white.
Before you're in too deep and the monotony of choosing yet another gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo starter option inspires you to call the whole thing off, take a second to sit back and breathe.
You're not alone. Not at all. In fact, thousands of grooms are making the same silly mistakes as you are every day.
That still doesn't make it okay though. Your future wife will not see it this way, nor should she. So after you've taken a few moments, take a few more and behold the comprehensive guide on how to navigate your nuptials.
Do your eyes glaze over at the mere mention of wedding plans? Do you find yourself repeating the phrase ‘yes, whatever you like’ when discussing colour palettes, centre pieces and, heaven forbid, napkin folds? These are all classic symptoms of an absentee groom.
Physically you may be there, but mentally? You're replaying the highlights of last night's match. And that's just not on.
Showing little to no enthusiasm is the biggest pre-wedding mistake every man makes. Guaranteed to cause extreme irritation in your better half, this is one of the main reasons couples argue during the crucial planning stages of their big day.
While the likes of place settings and wedding favours may not be your thing, your fiance is, so do yourself a favour; act perky, display interest, and, above all else, share your opinion!
Irish couples spend an average of €25,000 on their wedding. From the venue and the band, to the suit and the dress, the expenses will begin to roll in thick and fast.
Be realistic from the outset, yes this is your 'big day' but you'll have a whole load of other days to follow and it would be assumed that you don't want those days to be fueled by beans and toast.
Establish a clear budget which allocates funds according to priority. Spreadsheets are a fantastic way to manage and keep track of your spends.
Don’t be afraid to shop around for quotes and negotiate with vendors during your initial meetings. Little savings can go a long way in the future.
Contrary to popular belief, being a best man is not all birds and booze. It can be a tough gig. The long list of duties and special responsibilities require a certain calibre of man, i.e. someone with a bit of cop on.
Yes your lifelong best buddy may be mighty craic on a night out, but those skills aren't always transferable to doing something as important as, say, minding the rings.
Choose wisely and take into consideration which friend or relation boasts the best characteristics for the role. Reliability and good organisational skills are key requirements.
Aside from being a guardian of the one ring to rule them all, he must keep the other groomsmen in line, liaise with suppliers on the day, and know you and your partner’s relationship well enough to give an epic yet touching speech. No pressure so.
These days when it comes to picking your wedding attire, it’s all about injecting some personality into your look. While this in no way means that jeans are on the agenda, gone are the days of strict rules and compulsory three-piece garments.
The modern groom is spoiled for choice. Slim fit suits are the order of the day for a city slicker, while tweed is totally on-trend for rugged countryside affairs. Have fun with it and trust in a suit expert like Spirit to show you the way.
Simple but effective, put in place a strict alcohol limit the night before your nuptials. This is where you'll need a trusty best man to step in and be a watcher of the pints, wines and whiskey.
It may all seem like fun and games at the time, but beginning married life with a raging hangover does not make for a happily ever after.
We get it. Your entire life has been building up to this precise moment – the stag party. While a four-day session in the sun may be your idea of living the dream, that doesn’t mean everyone else will want to hear about your shenanigans.
If you find yourself making the stag your main priority, pause and take some time to reflect. Your vows and commitment to your future spouse should rank much higher and should be the main topic of conversation 95% of the time.
Sweet baby Jesus. The week of your wedding is not the time to trial a new hairstyle. Greeting your partner at the top of the aisle sporting a Jimmy Neutron-style quiff will not go down well.
Remember, your wedding photos last a lifetime. Ensure that you stick to what you know (and what your bride likes) when executing your pre-wedding grooming routine.
Earn some serious brownie points by paying attention to the finer details. From a thoughtful gift and handwritten love letter to the bride on the morning of, to shaking the father-of-the-bride’s hand at the top of the aisle, these sentimental gestures won’t go unnoticed.
You won't just look like an ass but you'll get into a lot of trouble too. So just don't do it.
Don’t assume the bride will arrive fashionably late to the wedding ceremony. While it is her prerogative, the chances are she could arrive on time due to sheer excitement. So be on time and maybe give that sneaky pub pitstop a miss.

The strategy here is “less stress, more success”. We’re talking simple, straight-to-the-point, no-fuss dressing. The checklist is short and sweet:
A BBQ, even if it is a Wedding BBQ, is always casual. Not the 'Star-Wars t-shirt and combat pants' kind of casual. But the 'tie-less, buttoned downed, chest hair on show' type casual.
It’s also a day to have a bit of relaxed fun. It’s still important to dress sharp – all the in-laws are still around. But the tie-pin, bow-tie and cravat aren’t a requirement (unless you’re a master of the modern dandy look).
If it’s warm, you want some tailored to-the-knee shorts. Perhaps chinos – relaxed, but sharp. And comfortable! Comfort is key for the day after BBQ, as a game of hangover footie, table tennis or rounders is likely to make an appearance...which we all now, when it involves in-laws, can get quite competitive.
Sockless loafers and a good quality shirt with the sleeves rolled up is also a shout, and gives you an opportunity to have a bit of fun with it. Floral, bright colours, big stripes – you’re most likely gonna have the jacket off here for most of the day so let your shirt do the talking.
If you’re re-working the suit for day two and aren't into loud shirts, stick a bright-coloured pocket-square in your suit jacket and you’ll achieve a similar effect. Make sure you’re wearing a t-shirt underneath to relax out the suit.
Add fresh kicks or boat shoes to dress down the outfit and a pair of killer sunglasses - you’re good to go.
For the very adventurous: white trousers in summer, camel-on-camel in winter – but steer clear of those drinking red wine.
And lastly –no matter what time you got in from the night before (if you even stopped) – slicked-back hair and a well-groomed beard are still required. It might not be the main event, but you still can’t look scruffy.
]]>Remember the days when you could rock up to a wedding in your work suit? Most of the guys at the wedding would be doing the same thing. But the times, they are a’ changin’.
Always a little late to the party, menswear in Ireland has been slow to adapt. But with the likes of Mc Gregor, Paul Galvin and Darren Kennedy showing it’s cool to be well-dressed, now is not the time to slack.
So, without further ado, here are the nine biggest mistakes Irish men make at weddings.
Take notes lads.
If you don’t understand this, all we can say is: don’t question it. It’s a colour combo that Does Not Work. It's practically bordering on offensive. And YES - that means you need to invest in a new pair of shoes.
The only way brown shoes will work is if you’re willing to wear an all-brown velvet suit with matching brown polo-neck (ala The Man From UNCLE) and we’re not sure the Irish man is quite ready for that look yet. It’s all-black, black and grey, all-brown or brown and grey.
Unless you have the style chops of Pharrell and you’re dripping head-to-toe Gucci and custom brogues, a shirt without a tie is an absolute no-no at a wedding.
It basically says you couldn’t be bothered. Plus, the tie (and socks – see below) are the two best expressions of personal style you can have at a wedding. Why forsake that opportunity?
You might get away with pulling a shirt out of the washing machine/ from under your bed/ sports bag and rock into the office. But hang your head in shame if you attempt the same at a wedding.
And if you don’t know how to tie a tie properly, sit yourself in the bold corner and get familiar with You Tube tutorials. It’s not cool to look like a door-to-door salesman anymore.
The goal here is to have a sharp, pressed and crisp shirt and the perfectly knotted tie/ bow-tie to set it off.
For God’s sake, go to a tailor would you? Any of the above conjures up secondary school vibes and you’ll run the risk of a teacher popping up out of somewhere to send you to detention for a “sloppy” uniform. Tailored trousers are the difference between a boy and a man.
If you don’t know that the socketh maketh the man then you don’t even deserve to be at the wedding. And if you think a natty old pair of black ones will do, you’re gravely mistaken. Socks are where you can absolutely shine.
Here you can have fun with prints and colour – although we strongly recommend the socks fit in with the overall “theme” or colour of the suit - so bright pinks, oversized polka dots or zany zigzags that fit with your general colour palette are all welcome.
This is the Commitments circa 1991 and not to be seen anywhere near a 2017 wedding circuit. Obviously black tie rules can involve a cummerbund and one can look like a damn fine James Bond. But unless you are extremely confident, you risk looking like a Prom King.
A Hawaiian print shirt? A tie with parrots? A little Pat Sharp, a little Elton John? Unless you’re either of these, save the snazzy prints for Halloween. Or the Christmas party. Or better yet, retire them.
The only way unkempt hair works today is it if it studiously so. That means: if it looks unkempt after an hour of styling. Otherwise, yes you need to get a trim before the wedding. And ABSOLUTELY yes, you need to shave the morning of the wedding.
With male grooming being such a huge industry, you’ve absolutely no excuse not to get a hot towel shave before the big day. Plus, it’s a bloody good experience.
Are you a cast member of Made In Chelsea? Have you been invited to one of their weddings? If so, feel free to leave your ripped, sun-kissed chest on show. Otherwise, put it away. And wrap a tie around it.
So there you have it - the nine mortal sins of wedding season. You've been warned!
]]>If you’re more “wtf is a pocket square?” than “I have them colour-coordinated alongside my smoking jackets”, then you’re going to have to brush up quick-smart my friend, as the pocket square is the trend of the season.
For the absolutely uninitiated, the pocket square is a piece of fabric that sits jauntily out of your breast-pocket. For the older generation, it was something of a handkerchief-must; but today, it’s simply about style.
The beauty of the pocket square is that it shows you’ve made an effort...when really you haven’t. It’s instant Mad Men, when all you’ve done is shoved a bit of fabric in your pocket.
The pocket square is a slicker, more streamlined, more sophisticated version of the corsage and it basically jazzes up a suit.
If you’re a man of few suits – or inherently lazy – you can actually get yourself to the second day of a wedding with just a wing and a pocket square.
Go for some punchy brights or bold patterns and you distract from the fact you’re virtually wearing the same outfit.
Bonus points if you match your pocket square to your socks – and it doesn’t even have to match perfectly, blending the same colour palette should suffice. The easiest way to look sharp AF is tonal-dressing – basically wearing different shades of the same colour.
So if you have a navy suit, crack out a bright blue pocket-square and some light blue socks – ramp it up an extra level with blue suede shoes and you’ll be the slickest guy in the crowd.
It can be done formal-to-the-max for your tuxedo events or you can keep it totally casual; dress it down with an open shirt and a devil-may-care smile. And if you’re feeling especially adventurous, you can do a cravat AND a pocket square.
Don’t believe us? See Jeremy Piven from Entourage as a reference. The modern dandy is very much a thing and believe us; it’s here to stay.
Do we have you convinced?
]]>When you’re in the hands of the Official Tailor to the FAI and Men's Senior International Soccer Team and the Dublin GAA you know you’re onto a winner. If it’s a suit you’re after lads, it can only be one brand – Irish-made and owned Benetti.
Benetti are all about the right things – craftsmanship, quality fabrics, contemporary design, fashion forward thinking. And comfortable – did we mention that? Benetti are damn comfortable to wear.
Get the cut right (high arm hold, sharp shoulder, six buttons and slim through the waist) – and voila, you’ve got a suit for life.
Some of the most popular styles are back-in-stock including the Cusack, the Hogan, the Wilton and the London Steel. So if you’re a 3-piece kinda guy, like a slim-fit, a quality check or a double-breast, Benetti has you covered.
Top of the ranks currently is the Wilton 3-piece in navy – classic, but ultra-sharp, followed by the Bonn 3-piece in grey – for the more fashion-forward. The London Steel Slim Fit is also popular among those looking to make a statement in work
The beauty of Benetti is you can get dressed, quite literally, head-to-toe. The Benetti shoe range includes everything from tassel loafers to round-toed brogues and then you’ve got all your separates covered including waistcoats, shirts and braces.
If you need any more motivation, check out Aaron Kerman, Conor McManus, David Moran, Ryan McHugh, Cillian Buckley and Maurice Shanahan all rocking their take on the Benetti. And see Bernard Brogan for an absolute masterclass in fit.
That’ll keep the missus happy.
]]>Many Irish guys can freak at the price of a good suit. But the reality is that a suit – on a cost-per-wear model – is literally a cash saver. One suit, five ways? No problem.
From the wedding to a work presentation to date night and the races, a suit can literally take you through any social situation.
The key here is to invest in the perfect suit for you – for your tastes, for your body type, for your budget and for your weekend activities. Once you’ve got that right, you can swop and change to instantly refresh your look.
This tailored suit by Benneti is just the ticket for slick tailored attire and mixing and matching opportunities.
So you’ve acquired the full suit – maybe a waistcoat, maybe some cuff-links – but this bad boy is strictly reserved for weddings, racing season and awards ceremonies (gotta aim high in life right?)
But fear not, you’re actually gonna whip it out sooner than you’d think. Have a big work presentation? Meeting the in-laws?
A christening? Take out those slacks and change up the shirt and tie combo. Here you can raid your wardrobe and really utilise any shirt as long as its a) in good shape and ironed and b) not a plaid shirt (see below).
The slacks are going to sharpen the look right up, so as long as you have something neat and presentable, you’re good to go for 'second-level-formality' events.
A pair of slacks and the right t-shirt is a perfect casual look. Crew neck and polo t-shirts are always a winner. If you’re into fashion trends then moss green and bright orange are the key colour trends this year for Autumn/ Winter.
But if you’re not a slave to fashion, a striped tee like this one is your best friend, as it never goes out of style.
If you’ve got some 'fun' shirts, this might not be the moment to showcase them – remember, your suit trousers are very high end with a strong crease-line and expensive-looking fit. Don’t ruin the effect with a Slayer t-shirt.
This is 'Wedding-Day-2' or 'Date Night' territory. Slacks, the right shirt and tie-less keep you formal, but with a good injection of personality. If you’re feeling brave, silk shirts are where it’s at. See Jamie from Made in Chelsea or any French man in general, for inspiration.
Otherwise, a good quality, form-fitting shirt will do you. Opt for prints to keep it interesting. Light speckles if you’re not showy and big floral motifs if you are. A check/lumberjack shirt is not appropriate here – save that for skinny jeans and a biker jacket.
Are you a sneaker-freak? Here’s where you can have a lot of fun. With the right pair of trainers you can instantly be transformed into Stormzy or Zayn Malik. Keep the trainers box-fresh and latest-edition if possible. A pair of classic, canvas, one-colour Vans are always a winner.
Extra points if you have camel slacks and opt for camel Vans (head-to-toe camel is one of the biggest looks this year) – otherwise a pair of all-black runners if you want to look more urban, and a pair of white tennis shoes if you want to look a bit more slick.
Really digging the urban look? Opt for a tonal or one-colour snapback or trucker hat. Think Pharrell. Not Billabong-Surfer-Dude.
Now if you opted for a waistcoat (and Beckham has made it well cool again), then you can venture into hipster territory. A casual, unstructured shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a pocketsquare and the last button of the waist-coat undone and voila – you’re ready for brunch.
Stick a flat-cap on top and you can even order a chai latte without anyone casting you a second glance.
Think you have to retire the waistcoat once summer comes round? Think again my friends. Wear a short-sleeved shirt in summer and you can still rock the waist-coat. It’s surprisingly versatile and transcends seasons.
So, there you have it lads. Sure you're practically saving money by investing in a suit. It's a non-brainer.
]]>Firstly, can we just say: don’t panic. Yes, writing the most important thing you’ll ever have to say in public is pretty scary. Terrifying even.
But what you have to remember is that it’s an opportunity to say some seriously heartfelt things after a year of planning, saving and having most of your conversations revolve around table settings. (Oh the politics, the politics!)
With all the wedding prep, the stag festivities and the million-and-one things to do in the lead up to the Big Day, it’s rare you get a chance to sit down and tell your bride how much they mean to you.
So the speech is a moment to take stock and let everyone in the room know how much you appreciate them. Don’t worry – with our few choice tips – and a nip of whiskey – you’ll nail it.
Guessing the length of the speeches has become as integral a part of the wedding as the ceremony. This is why it’s good to be prepared.
No, you don’t need to learn the speech by rote, but you do need to have some sort of rehearsal that is timed so you don’t go waaaaay over the mark.
You know everybody in the room will be making bets, let them be making bets for the right reasons. A few run-throughs in your head, timed with a stopwatch and you’ll save yourself a lot of heartache.
Actual time recommendations? Can you put a limit on love? Yes. Fifteen minutes if you’re really bricking it, 30 minutes if you’re an effusive type. After the 30 minutes, you’re going to screw up the rest of the speeches.
Funny. But not too funny. We’re talking light-hearted reminiscing– not calling out trigger issues or anything too blue, too revealing, too personal, too dry, too cerebral. Easy, breezy anecdotes that lovingly recall a memory or person or trait.
Not a character assassination for the laughs,or a comic re-telling of the time you landed in jail, or how much you dislike your mother-in-law. Nothing too close to the line. And if that’s how you roll, maybe consider a straight-style speech and leave the stand-up act for another time.
The thanks are important – the best man will thank the bridesmaids. The groom thanks the parents, but also the bridesmaids, his best man and groomsmen.
Don’t waste precious time by calling out every single thank you. Get through these quickly, so you can turn your attention to: The Bride.
Most importantly, you thank the bride – it’s a love letter to your wife, your future partner and the bulk of this speech is thanking her for actually agreeing to put up with you.
This part has to be soppy and meaningful and heartfelt and poignant and if you nail all that, then you can throw in a few chuckles...And don’t cut into your time thanking your bride with anecdotes about your best mate – it’s not the time.
This sounds obvious – don’t drink before the speeches – but you would be surprised how many “nips” of whiskey it can take to knock down a groom.
A groom who, most likely, has very little in his belly, has ran a marathon of errands that morning, and possibly was on a detox the month before the wedding.
Of course, a few sips here and there are obligatory – part of the ritual. But just keep an eye on them. Slurring the speech is not a good look.
Are you going with social media or not? If it’s a no-go, the speech is a good opportunity to remind your guests not to post – the most sensitive way to state this is that the bride and groom would like to be responsible for posting the first picture of themselves.
If you’re all ABOUT that social media, the speech is a reminder to use the hash tag!
Don’t wing it. Just don’t do it. It’s absolutely not worth it. No matter how gifted a public speaker you are or how much you can nail a work pitch, the wedding speech is an entirely different beast altogether.
You would be surprised how wedding jitters can take the most confident guy by surprise and reduce you to a quivering wreck in the blink of an eye.
You do not need to be running around like a headless chicken, the morning of the wedding, trying to recall romantic moments and pitch-perfect anecdotes.
In the month leading up to the wedding, take a few moments once or twice a week to jot down some thoughts and ideas somewhere safe.
Let them percolate until a speech starts to form and in the last week before the wedding, put them into a concrete structure and practice timing. And once you’re under the 30 minute mark, get up there, give it socks and don’t forget to smile.
